Were You Harmed by Toxic Water in Flint, Michigan?

Table of Contents

Up to 12,000 children have been exposed to extraordinary high levels of lead contaminated water since April 2014 when city officials changed the drinking water source for Flint, Michigan from Lake Huron treated water in the Detroit water system to the Flint River water treatment plant. City officials sent toxic water into the homes of residents, causing children to drink, bath in, and consume lead-tainted water.

Almost immediately, residents began complaining of foul smelling, discolored water that was heavy with sediment. Residents report that after consuming and bathing in the water, they began to suffer hair loss, skin rashes, nausea, and vomiting. The city then issued a boil-order that only made things worse, as lead becomes even more concentrated when boiled in water.

How Toxic is Flint Water?

The EPA considers 5 ppb (parts per billion) of lead in drinking water as cause for concern. Samples from homes across Flint found results ranging from 27 ppb to 1,000 ppb and even up to 5,000 ppb, a sample level that the EPA defines as toxic waste.
